How are grandparents spending time during this lockdown in Nepal?
We recently asked our community on Facebook and Instagram to share pictures of how their grandparents were spending time during this month-long COVID-19 lockdown. Below is what we received. Thank you to everyone who contributed!
Sushila Sthapit, 73 years old, is learning Newa Lipi script via an online course. Photo taken by her granddaughter Lirisha Tuladhar. Lirisha is pursuing her bachelors degree in public health at Central Institute of Science and Technology (CIST) College.

Saina Shrestha, 9th grader from St.Mary's High School, Jawalakhel applies nail polish on her 84 years old grandmother Ram Kumari Shrestha. They are spending quality time with each other at home which was not always possible during her busy school days.

Shanker Nath Kapali in his early 70s giving a piggy back ride to 14 months old Elias Shrestha after their morning ritual of feeding birds. 76 years old Nanda Sthapit translating Newari folk tales to English with his 14 yrs old granddaughter Livana Tuladhar. Livana studies in grade 10 in Bagmati Boarding Higher Secondary School. The book they are translating is called ‘न्यहंकँह बाखं/ Nyo Kan Bakhaan’ which means ‘Listen and Tell Stories’ by Prem Bahadur Kasaa and includes some of the most popular Newari folk tales like ‘धों चलेचा’, ‘सिनापता मेय्जु’, ‘धुकुपिकु जुजु’ and ‘छुय मचा धुँ’.

Sunil Ratna Tuladhar always takes his two year old granddaughter Deija along with him to feed the stray dogs and pigeons. Sometimes when he forgets, Deija religiously follows the regime of feeding the stray dogs and pulls his hand and asks for a packet of biscuit.
