Happy 90th Birthday, Mami!
Written by Seema Shrestha, a Nepali expat living in New York.
It is so amazing that my mother, Ratna Devi Shrestha, just turned 90 few days back. I am blessed to be her daughter, along with my elder brother Vijay and sister Neelam. My mother has taught me so much, even though she didn’t get an opportunity for formal education. Everything that I know today, I learned from her.
She got married at the age of 9 (child marriage was common then). She is a strong and kind woman, with a heart of gold. Very patient, never angry, and always spoke good about everyone. She is also one of the best cooks of Nepali food: she makes the best shel roti and achars. She enjoys spending her time weaving cotton wicks for religious offerings, making leaf plates and bowls, cooking, gardening, knitting, sewing, and engaging in religious activities. Ever so helpful to all. She always stressed on the importance of simple living & high thinking.
When she was about 45 years old, she planted a sacred Fig tree (Bar Peepal) on the way to our farm house where we had a very big fish pond and a huge farm. Now she is 90 years old and the tree has grown so big. Here is the picture of the peepal tree that she planted 45 years back.
Though she is 90 years old, she still loves to watch tv shows & movies. She always maintains her standard no matter what her situation is and she never forgets to fulfill her required duty to any one. I wanted to share this blog about her to celebrate her 90th birthday. She is so much more than I can write about. I can never stop loving her, so grateful for teaching me so much.
Love you Mami! From your daughter Seema.
